ProActive Preparedness for CSA 2010

CSA 2010 is scheduled to go operational in July 2010. There is and has been much speculation regarding this new initiative to change the way FMCSA rates safety performance by carriers and drivers. One thing is for sure and that is, as it is almost always the case, compliance will be more difficult for small carriers.

NASTC believes there are several pro-active steps that our members can take to get off to a good start under the new system. Some of these measures include:

1. Orientation of new-hire’s on the hours of service and logs

2. An ongoing driver training program

3. Flawless compliance on drug and alcohol testing

4. An ongoing driver awareness and safety program

5. Quarterly or monthly MVR monitoring

6. More stringent background checks on new-hires

7. Company Safe-Stat monitoring and error correction

8. Providing a superior truck stop network with a driver’s health, safety, and welfare in mind

9. A consistent preventative maintenance program at home and over-the-road

10. More than annual truck and trailer inspections

11. Subscribing to PrePass or PrePass Plus

12. Implementation of a driver fatigue program

You cannot ignore or pay lip service to the above areas and expect to survive the scrutiny of CSA 2010.

NASTC has a management and safety program that addresses all the above issues. It is affordable and easily achieved without upsetting you or your drivers’ work week. Implementation will:

 Improve your safety rating

 Improve driver morale and retention

 Reduce insurance costs

 Improve insurance loss runs

 Will allow you to attract better drivers

 Will allow you to garner better paying freight

 And, will ultimately improve your bottom line
